Legislation and regulations for fire sealing installation shafts
Fire sealing of installation shafts is a requirement in BR18, which sets rules for how building elements must prevent the spread of fire. A shaft that connects several fire separated parts of the building must itself be separated from the rest, and that can be done by building it as a fire compartment in its own right. Pipes, cables and ducts pass in and out through the shaft wall, and every opening has to be sealed so the wall keeps its fire resistance. Cavities along the way must be closed off, so a fire cannot travel on through them. The requirements are set out in BR18 sections 116, 114 and 115, and the fire strategy for the individual project may go further.
